A fanlisting, quite simply, is a list of people who share a similar interest in a particular fannish activity, whether about a show, a character, or some relationship.
Carpe Gloriam is a fanlisting about Van Grants, a character from the PS2 RPG, Tales of the Abyss, developed by Namco-Bandai. The CG FL is run by Ruaki. |

Name: Van Grants Age: 27 Height: 189cm / 6'2" Weight: 86kg / 189lbs Class: Fonic Swordsman [Albert Style] VA: Nataka Jouji (Japan), Michael McConnohie (Eng.) Van is a Maestro in the Order of Lorelei, as well as Commandant of the Oracle Knights, the military unit within the Order. He is a very skilled swordsman, a brilliant strategist, and a charismatic leader, all of which helped propel him through the Knights and Order to gain such an esteemed position at such a young age. Van has one sister, Tear Grants, who he practically raised. He also commands the Six God-Generals (Rokujinshou) as his direct subordinates. In his spare time, he serves as the swordsmanship tutor for Luke fon Fabre, son of Duke Fabre and an heir apparent to the Kimslascan throne. ... There is a rumour that his eyebrows can shoot laser beams. Some say his beard also possibly hides candy. Trivia:

Van Grants was born on the Isle of Hod as Vandesdelca Musto Fende to the House Fende, who served the ruling House Gardios as their Sword. The family of Fende were direct descendents of Yulia and keepers of the Seventh Fonstone. Van was able to read the Score of Death predicted by Yulia on the Seventh Fonstone, and thus sparked his obsession of destroying the Score.
When Van was eleven, he was forced to destroy Hod by Malkuth scientists under Jade Balfour's administration (it is unclear if Jade had a direct hand in it). The scientists used a machine to force Van to set off an artificial hyperresonance that destroyed the boy's beloved home. He managed to save his mother (then pregnant with Mystearica/Tear) and survive the sinking into the Qliphoth through the use of Yulia's Hymns. They were taken in by Theodore Grants at Yulia City. Van never felt at home in Yulia City--he was teased for being an Outlander--and thus travelled greatly. Presumably, his plan for the replica world was put into motion during this time, as he rose through the ranks of the Oracle Knights quickly and gained the trust of House Fabre and their son, Luke (Asch). Around his entrance into House Fabre, he also reunited with the sole survivor of House Gardios, Gailardia Galan, who was working as a servant to Luke under the pseudonym Guy Cecil. The two originally plotted together for House Fabre's fall (as House Fabre also had a hand in Hod's destruction), although Van did not reveal the extent of his own designs to his young lord. When Van was twenty, he kidnapped Luke (Asch) because he needed the boy's special ability to create hyperresonances. Van then created the replica Luke and sent the replica to House Fabre, so that the Score predicting "Luke's" death will take the replica and not the true one. Van still maintained even the trust of this new Luke, to the extent that the replica Luke revered him intensely. The game starts with Van as an ally and respected teacher and leader. As the story progresses, it is revealed that Van had a plan to destroy all the original beings and replace them with replicas in order to destroy Lorelei and the Score. Since he believed the Score was absolute and served as the planet's memory, he felt that the only way that people could stop the Score or to stop depending on it was to replace them with blank slates not born into the Score's cycle. His obsession with the Score no doubt eventually drove this once kind, wise, and esteemed man insane. |

Van is hot. =( But anyway. I created this fanlisting because... well... cause Van seriously deserves some love. It's pretty obvious that Van was incredibly displaced by the loss of his home and loved ones, and the fact that it had been predicted and forced to happen because of some dead woman's prophecy has got to be the salt in the wound. One gets the idea that Van spent a lot of his youth thereafter searching for a place to belong--in the end, he decided that it was nowhere. Even if his replica plan suceeded, Van still planned on killing himself, because he was an 'original,' and therefore still be complacent to the Score.
Guy and Tear maintained that he was so awesome and cool when he was younger; it makes you wonder just what snapped up there in his head to twist him enough to think that his thought process was the correct and only way--that killing his sister and his lord painlessly was the greatest gift he could give them? Just wow. I didn't appreciate Van till my replay of Abyss, because to try to understand his mind and his reasons really required knowing the full story of what was going on. But, really, he's hot. I mean, my GOD did you see his final form? I'd totally tap that. ♥ rawr The name 'Carpe Gloriam' was chosen for the fanlisting because 'vandesdelca' means 'one who would seize glory' in Ancient Ispanian. Obviously the title is a play off the Latin phrase, 'carpe diem,' or 'seize the day.' Now, it is 'seize the glory.' Plus, it doesn't sound totally angsty like so many other FLs. =( |
